A residential home with many gas cylinders in storage was exploded on Saturday morning in a village of Yulin City, south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, trapping two people.
Video footage showed the owner of the home, surnamed Chen, carried a gas cylinder back home, then ten minutes later, the home suddenly exploded at 08:25, with the door blown up and glasses shattered. Chen, catching fire on body, rushed out of the home.
When firefighters arrived at site at 08:35, thick smoke billowed from the building. The blast site was littered with debris and the fire flamed intensely. There were two people trapped on the roof of the three-story building.
Firefighters took immediate actions to put out the fire with high-pressure water gun, and carried 42 cylinders in the home to the open ground outside. Then firefighters entered the building and successfully brought the two trapped people to the safety.
At 08:55, the fire was totally extinguished.
"According to a preliminary investigation, the fire was triggered by the leak of liquid gas. The blast site is suspected to be an illegal workshop of filling liquid gas without permission. The gas was provided for neighboring residents and small restaurants. In the illegal workshop, most of gas cylinders were scrapped, and there was no safety protection during the process of filling gas," said Huang Zhe, office director, headquarters of Yulin city fire brigade.
Further investigation of the cause of the accident is underway.
