Located in close proximity to Wanlong and Duolemeidi ski resorts, Genting Secret Garden Resort (密苑云顶乐园)also boasts a stunning backdrop of snow-covered mountains with nicely groomed slopes. The slopes range from easy green runs to double black diamonds and plenty in between to satisfy the range of skill and comfort levels of its riders. But what sets Genting apart from the rest is that they are the first to really raise the bar with fancy seat-heated gondolas that run on the same line as their chair lifts, which also come equipped with pull-down cover shields to block the biting winds. Chair lifts begin as soon as you step outside of the hotel lobby, cutting down the time it takes to leave the breakfast room to the top of the mountain just a few minutes away. We were impressed with the slopes and the resort itself is also among the nicest we’ve seen in China. There are pool tables, foosball tables, an island cocktail bar with a lounge area that features a stage that shows either x-treme snowboarding/ski videos or live music performers in the afternoon during buy-one-get-one-free happy hour (ends 8PM). Aside from the included breakfast buffet, we also had dinner in one of their in-house restaurants called Green Dragon. The menu had everything from burgers and pizzas to Hainan Chicken Rice, curries and wonton noodles.
The Chinese Olympic Committee has announced that the Capital and the city of Zhangjiakou in Hebei province have launched a joint bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. If the two Chinese cities are awarded the Games, Beijing will become the first city to ever host both a Summer and Winter Olympics. According to the COC, Beijing would stage the ice events while Zhangjiakou, reknowned here in China for its excellent ski resorts, will host the snow events. In order to ensure easy transportation between the two cities which are located 200 kilometres apart the preliminary plans call for a new high speed railway to be built cutting travel time between them to only 40 minutes. The IOC Executive Board will review the bids in July 2015 and then take a vote to determine the finalists with the host city to be elected at the 127th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur.
From the Genting Secret Garden Resort Website - “Located in Taizi Village (Prince Village) on the outskirts of Zhangjiakou City, Secret Garden is a 6.5 billion yuan investment on 99 sq km of land with 87 ski routes (totalling 70km in length) and complemented by 22 ski lifts (totalling 30km in length). In the 2011-2012 snow season, Genting Resort Secret Garden completed and opened more than 400 000 sqm of land containing 11 ski trails and one large ski slope serviced by two high-speed cable chairlift systems. As China’s foremost tourist resort project, it is the largest in terms of size, investments and variety of attractions. Genting Resort Secret Garden with its panorama of majestic woodland heights, cloud-shrouded peaks and clear mountain air is just a short hop away.”
Before we left Beijing, I also brought the kids to attend the Hutong Chinese dumplings cooking class. The teacher (Michelle) was just wonderful! The Hutong Kitchen is located in a typical Chinese lane-house in Hutong. Due to the holidays, there were only 7 students in our class and the rest are adults other than my kids. The facilities are very clear and the environment is very relaxing. There were lots of interaction with the class attendees, and it is quite a fun morning to make our own dumpling from scratch and enjoyed eating them at the end of the class. I strongly recommend this class to anyone who's interested in making their own dumplings. It costs 240 CNY per person which includes: 3+ hours cooking class + dumpling lunch with some additional salad + tea and water. It is totally worth it!
